The Quick Verdict

The Rolex Shanghai Masters is the most exotic Masters 1000 event on the tour — the only one held outside Europe and North America. It takes place at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in October, a venue built specifically for tennis with a roof that opens and closes in the shape of a blooming magnolia flower. It is unambiguously the most architecturally interesting tennis venue in the world. The Asian swing, including the China Open in Beijing the week before, means the world's best players arrive in Shanghai in form and the draw is always stacked. If you're going to China for the first time, Shanghai in October — warm, culturally dense, and genuinely one of the great cities — is an excellent reason to make the trip.

Getting Your Tickets

Tickets are sold through the official Rolex Shanghai Masters website at en.rolexshanghaimasters.com. Tickets are sold in categories: Category S and Category 1 (lower level, best views), Category 2, and Category 3 (upper level). All tickets are reserved — when listed as 'General' for a category, this means the exact section is assigned on ticket delivery, not at purchase.

Important: to purchase tickets, you are required to present a valid passport or Chinese ID. Bring the same ID document to the venue as it will be checked at entry. This is strictly enforced. Register and download the official app or have your ticket QR code accessible before you arrive.

For hospitality and VIP packages, ATP Experiences (atptourexperiences.com) is the official partner. Packages include premium seating, lounge access, and exclusive experience elements.

Getting There

Qizhong is in the Minhang District, about 30km southwest of central Shanghai. It is not close to the city centre — allow 45-60 minutes from most central hotels.

The official shuttle bus is the most practical option for most visitors. It departs from the South Square of Xinzhuang Station (Metro Line 1), stops at Zhuanqiao Station (Metro Line 5), and terminates between Gates 1 and 2 at Qizhong. This service runs throughout the tournament from late morning until after the final match. Check the official website for the 2026 timetable.

Alternatively: Metro Line 1 to Xinzhuang, then the shuttle bus. Or Metro Line 5 to Zhuanqiao and the shuttle. Taxi from the South Bund or People's Square area takes 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Didi (the Chinese Uber equivalent) is the standard app for ride-hailing.

Seat Guide

Center Court — the Magnolia Roof

The Qizhong arena is the most visually striking tennis venue in the world. The eight roof petals that open and close in a spiral pattern are genuinely spectacular in operation. The court holds roughly 15,000 fans. Category 1 seats (Silver, Gold, and Platinum Box) are in the lower level; Category 2 (purple level) is just above the lower boxes; Category 3 is upper level across red, silver, and grey sections.

The stadium is open-air when the roof is open, which is the case for most of the tournament — Shanghai in October has pleasant weather and the roof is typically only closed for rain. This means sun exposure is a consideration for day sessions.

Outer Courts and Grounds

The tournament grounds are expansive and modern with shops, food stands, and a large Rolex retail presence. The outer courts host first-round and doubles matches and are worth time — the intimate close-range experience of watching a top-50 player compete on a small court is one of those consistently undervalued experiences at any Masters event.

Food and Drink — The Important Note

You cannot bring outside food or drink into the Qizhong venue. The on-site food and beverage options are primarily Chinese fast food and international tournament standards. Budget accordingly and eat before you arrive if you're particular about your food.

Shanghai as a food city is world-class. The French Concession neighbourhood has some of the best restaurants in Asia — try Lost Heaven for Yunnan cuisine or Ultraviolet if you want the most extreme restaurant experience available anywhere. For something more local: xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) at Din Tai Fung or Jia Jia Tang Bao are mandatory Shanghai experiences.

What to Wear

Shanghai in October is autumn — mild and pleasant, typically 18-24C. A light jacket for evenings is recommended as temperatures drop after sunset. The venue is open-air for most sessions, so bring sunscreen for day play. Comfortable shoes are important; the Qizhong grounds are large and involve significant walking.

Practical China Notes

Download WeChat and Alipay before you arrive — these are the primary payment apps in China and many vendors don't accept international credit cards. Didi works with international cards and is the reliable way to get a taxi or private car. VPN access for international websites (including Google Maps) requires a VPN set up before you enter China — do this before you travel. Bring physical cash (RMB/Yuan) as a backup for places that don't take apps.

The Shanghai metro is excellent — clean, fast, and easy to navigate even with limited Mandarin. Signage is bilingual (Chinese and English) and the ticketing machines accept cash and cards. English is spoken at most tourist venues but less so in local neighbourhoods.

Things to Do Beyond the Tennis

Shanghai in October is the city at its best — the summer humidity has lifted, the light is good, and the famous plane trees of the French Concession are turning. The Bund at night (the colonial-era waterfront boulevard) is one of the great urban views in Asia. The M50 art district in Putuo is worth a morning. The Shanghai Museum in People's Square has the finest collection of ancient Chinese bronzes and jade in the world and is free.

If extending the trip: Beijing is 1.5 hours by high-speed train. Xi'an (Terracotta Army) is 5 hours. Tokyo is 3 hours by flight. The Asian swing in October is one of the more logical times to extend a tennis trip into a broader Asia journey.

Hospitality Packages

ATP Experiences is the official hospitality partner for the Shanghai Masters. Packages include VIP hospitality access with premium seating and exclusive experience elements. Given the logistical complexity of visiting Shanghai as an international traveller, an all-in package that handles tickets, transfers, and some F&B makes more sense here than at most events. We've curated a selection — view hospitality packages here.
